Open Source continues to capture market share in the enterprise. But can it
last? If recent published articles are to be believed, the answer is no.
According to a June 2005 Forbes article, only one company has the riddle
solved and companies like IBM and Microsoft, with much to lose if the world
goes "open," can reverse any advances on the turn of a dime. Is this view
correct and, if so, what needs to be done to ensure it doesn't become a
reality?
The answer lies with two crucial pieces the so called "middle of the
stack solutions" and applications. Advances in clustering solutions,
databases and other "plumbing" are being made that will offset the fear,
uncertainty and despair campaigns of proprietary loyalists and fuel the
potential of an open source expansion that will reinvent the entire
